Abstract

Music & Clowns is an animated documentary about Down syndrome that intimately portrays the subjectivity and relationships between my brother, our parents, and myself. This film will function as a case study to facilitate a reflective exploration and practice-informed analysis of the theoretical frameworks and discourses categories animated documentary. I will place emphasis on the value of Bill Nichols’ modes of documentary, over Annabella Honess Roe categories of animated documentary, demonstrating the importance of integrating animation within the wider discourse of documentary and disputing the usefulness of isolating the animated documentary as a discipline defined by difference from live action practice.
